Kitchen Splashbacks (skinali): What They Are and How Original Illustration Creates a Home Atmosphere
Everyone strives to make their home not only comfortable, but also special. In the kitchen, the focal point is most often the splashback (skinali) — the wall space between the countertop and the upper cabinets. And one of the most modern and practical ways to style it is with glass panels.
For me, this is much more than just a renovation element. Once upon a time, a friend of mine was browsing interior design photos and suddenly recognized one of my illustrations on a glass splashback. It was such a delightfully pleasant surprise! It turned out my artwork had begun being combined into long panoramic compositions and had become quite popular among those looking for unique kitchen solutions.
Today, I create exclusive designs for glass splashbacks myself, which you can find on my website. But let's take a closer look at what they actually are and why they have won so much love.
What Are Glass Splashbacks and What Are They Made Of?
In interior design, these are decorative glass panels used to protect and style the walls in the working area of the kitchen.
Most commonly, they are made from:
Tempered glass: It is 4–5 times stronger than regular glass, resistant to accidental impacts, high temperatures near the stove, and humidity changes.
Optiwhite (Extra-clear glass): Unlike standard glass, which has a slight greenish tint, Optiwhite is completely transparent. This allows all the nuances and exact colors of the original artwork to be transmitted without distortion.
How Does the Image Get onto the Glass?
The image is applied to the reverse side of the panel—most often using direct UV printing. Because of this, the ink is securely sealed beneath the glass. You can cook every day, wash the wall with standard glass cleaners, and not worry: the image won't fade in the sun, scratch, or be ruined by grease or steam.
Why Are Glass Splashbacks Convenient and Practical?
Flawless cleanliness: Unlike tile, a glass splashback is a continuous sheet without joints or grout lines where dirt typically accumulates. Cleaning a smooth glass surface takes just seconds.
Visual space: Glossy glass reflects light, making even a small kitchen look visually lighter and more spacious.
Reliable wall protection: Glass perfectly withstands any kitchen challenges, from steam to oil splashes.
Art in the Kitchen: From Minimalism to Unique Stories
Today, there is a clear trend in interiors toward minimalism and reducing visual clutter. However, high-quality, thoughtful original art can completely transform a space, making a kitchen "alive" and truly unforgettable.
Illustrations can tell their own stories. For instance, one of my clients wanted to integrate 23 portraits of their relatives into the cozy scenery of my little streets! It turned out to be an incredibly warm, heartfelt, and deeply personal solution—a true generator of pleasant memories and family coziness every time you gather in the kitchen for morning coffee.
By creating new exclusive designs for my website, this is precisely what I aim for: ensuring that every drawing adds lightness, harmony, and a special mood to the space.
